On Monday night, Matt Duchene scored twice and helped Thomas Harley score the game-winning goal 2:16 into overtime, as the Dallas Stars defeated the Seattle Kraken 4-3.
For the Stars, who have gone 3-0-1 in their last four games, Jason Robertson also scored.
“We knew we deserved it and whether we were going to get it or not, who knows?” Duchene stated. “It’s a coin flip when you get to OT, but fortunately we were able to get it done.”
With 21.8 seconds remaining in regulation, a 6-on-5 goal by Eeli Tolvanen for the Kraken sent the game into overtime.
With both teams’ starting goalies out due to injury, Scott Wedgewood (7-1-2) prevailed in the game between the backup goalies. After a slap shot to the area of his left collarbone where there was no padding, Wedgewood fell to the ice, but he recovered to make 35 saves. The early scare came about three minutes in.
“It stung like hell,” Wedgewood remarked. “It’s one of those ones where your Adam’s Apple’s in the back of your throat, you want to make sure you can breathe.”
The Kraken, who have dropped 10 of their previous 12 games (2-6-4), were led in goals and assists by Tomas Tatar and Matty Beniers. Joey Daccord (5-5-8) made his fourth consecutive start and stopped 24 shots.
The teams had not faced each other since Dallas’ seven-game triumph in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs the previous season.
“Very pleased with the point we obtained. Coach Dave Hakstol of the Krakens, whose team had just lost to the Los Angeles Kings in a shootout, expressed disappointment once more that his team was unable to secure the second point in overtime.
