According to Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s Head of Design, the business is developing an inductive wireless charging system for the home garages of its electric cars in response to efforts made by the company to alleviate the increased traffic at some charging points. Internally known as “Project Garfield,” the technology seeks to provide a substitute for conventional wall chargers and Superchargers.
A substitute for conventional wall chargers
Tesla owners could charge their cars by just driving over the wireless charging pads, which would be placed on the ground. This invention may lessen the need for wall chargers and help owners who forget to leave their cars plugged in overnight.
During Tesla’s 2023 Investor Day presentation, the idea of wireless charging for Tesla automobiles was alluded to. A drive-in at the Hollywood Supercharger was displayed, with what looked like a wireless charging pad in a garage with a Model S parked on it.
During the summer, Tesla acquired Wiferion, a wireless charging business, underscoring its strategic foray into the wireless charging space. Under covert circumstances, Tesla acquired Wiferion’s assets while keeping its engineering staff.
The user experience will be improved and the charging procedure streamlined with the possible deployment of wireless charging pads. According to Von Holzhausen, consumers would “just pull up in your garage, drive over the pad, and you’re charging” for a seamless wireless charging experience.
Although the exact release date of this technology is yet unknown, Tesla’s move into wireless charging represents a major advancement in the field of electric vehicle charging.
