Tesla Plans To Launch A New Model 3 And Y Performance Mode

Code from recent firmware upgrades suggests that Tesla may be preparing to provide a new Performance mode for the Model 3 and Model Y.

The only information regarding a “soft performance limit” option for the Model 3 and Y found in current software was uploaded by Tesla code sleuth Green on Sunday. The account claims that the options are listed as 110kW and 160kW, respectively. The finding appears to indicate that Tesla plans to release a paid update for the software-locked mode, enabling owners to upgrade and utilise the entire battery range.

Others have speculated that the change may be the result of rules in certain regions, including Singapore, where the carmaker recently introduced a Model 3 RWD 110 configuration to ostensibly satisfy maximum power output exemptions given to electric vehicles (EVs) with a power output of less than 110kW.

However, Tesla has made hints recently that it would begin charging for performance enhancements for its cars.

Elon Musk hinted earlier this month that Tesla will eventually provide software-locked performance enhancements for the Model Y, after the introduction of a new base-level Long Range RWD configuration by the company to replace the previous, less capable model.

Additionally, Musk stated that the software update would cost between $1,500 and $2,000 and provide an extra 40 to 60 miles of range, matching the new Long Range Trim on select models.

When Tesla would start providing the previously mentioned “soft performance limit” is unclear, but green has a history of spotting things before they’re formally announced.

In addition, green recently discovered something in the code for software update 2024.14.3 that appeared to be a Tesla hands-free voice assistant. The post claims that the assistant is programmed to turn on automatically using a word that the hacker coined a “wakeword,” which would cause the vehicle to constantly be on the lookout for it.

From code discovered in update 2023.44.30.8, green revealed some information about planned car features in January. These features included a “mechanical horn” steering wheel and yoke set, which are anticipated to be made available for the Model S and X.
