Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, set an NFL record on Monday by scoring his 15th rushing touchdown of the 2023 NFL season on a 1-yard sneak against the New York Giants.
The former Alabama signal-caller scored on Philadelphia’s second offensive play against the Giants, giving him more rushing touchdowns in 2023 than any other NFL quarterback in a single season.
Hurts and Cam Newton shared the league record going into Monday’s match. Following his selection as the No. 1 pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2011, the former Auburn All-American set a record for quarterback touchdowns with 14.
Hurts and Newton are the only two quarterbacks out of the ten who have scored at least ten touchdowns in a single season. Newton scored 14 touchdowns in 2011, 10 in 2015, and 12 in 2020. In 2022, Hurts had 13 and in 2021, 10. Only these quarterbacks have scored over 12 touchdowns in a season.
Hurts is fifth among all NFL quarterbacks with 41 running touchdowns, even though he started his 49th career game on Monday.
Newton’s 75 running touchdowns set a career high for quarterbacks. Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills right now, has 51, Otto Graham had 44, and Steve Young had 43.
Hurts is the only player from Philadelphia at any position with more rushing touchdowns than three. With 69 rushing touchdowns, Steve Van Buren owns the franchise record; Wilbert Montgomery had 45, and LeSean McCoy had 44.
Hurts’ 2023 production ties Van Buren’s 1945 total of 15 touchdown runs for the second-highest in a single season in team history. McCoy’s 17 rushing touchdowns in 2011 set a single-season record for Philadelphia.
This season, Hurts has scored eleven touchdowns on 1-yard plunges using Philadelphia’s Brotherly Shove formation. Six of Newton’s 14 touchdowns in 2011 came from one yard out.
