Happy Ikostí-pémpti Martíou, Greece!
On the 199th commemoration of the Eastern Mediterranean nation announcing its autonomy, the present Doodle observes Greece’s National Day.
After about 400 years as a feature of the Ottoman Empire, the push for autonomy touched off as the Greek banner was raised over the religious community of Agia Lavra by Bishop Germanos of Patras in 1821.
The blue and white of the Greek banner, like the one portrayed in the Doodle fine art, was a progressive image of the Greek War for Independence.
Through the London Protocol in 1830, Greece turned into a free state.
