The best-selling SUV from Chevy will be electric starting in 2019. Francisco Garza, President of GM’s Mexico division, has stated that production of the electric Chevy Equinox will start in the first quarter of 2024.
GM plans to start producing the Equinox EV in Q1 2024.
According to Garza this week, GM will start producing the Chevy Equinox EV at its Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico in the first quarter of 2024.
After the Blazer EV, it will be the second electric SUV constructed at the plant. At the end of June, the factory produced its first Blazer EV, and customer deliveries started in the third quarter.
“The Chevy Equinox EV will also arrive in Mexico; production is scheduled to start during the first quarter of next year,” said Garza.
Despite some challenges this year, the company hopes to meet its sales targets, according to the head of operations in Mexico.
To increase output, GM has added nearly 2,700 new employees to the factory since it started producing EVs. At the moment, the plant has about 9,000 employees. By year’s end, the facility will have built 200 Blazer EVs every day.
Next year is anticipated to see a “considerable increase” in the production of Chevy Equinox electric vehicles.
The announcement follows GM’s October announcement that it was delaying the manufacturing of the GMC Sierra Denali EV, Equinox, and Silverado EV. The initial plan was for Equinox EV production to start this past autumn.
Starting at $48,995 and $52,395 respectively, the 2RS FWD and 2RS AWD will be the first models to be offered early in the following year. The EPA range of the 2RS model is 319 miles.
At the end of next year, the less expensive $34,995 trim is anticipated to go on sale. According to GM, it will have a range of 319 miles. Starting pricing will be in the mid-$20,000 level with the $7,500 tax credit.
Electrek’s Opinion
When GM’s best-selling Bolt EV is set to retire at the end of this year, the Chevy Equinox EV will take over in a significant capacity.
GM intends to introduce a next-generation Bolt, but not until 2025. There is now a hole in GM’s “EVs for everyone” strategy.
The starting price of the $30,000 Equinox EV, which GM hinted at, will be almost $5,000 more. Furthermore, the least expensive model won’t be available until late next year, at the most.
Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors, expressed disappointment with the year’s EV output, but she thinks new Ultium products, such as the electric Blazer and Equinox, will encourage uptake.
