Scientists have found a planet about the size of Earth that is constantly exposed to radiation; its atmosphere has long since corroded away, leaving it bare. While astronomers are not interested in life as we know it because they might be able to study the geology of a planet outside our solar system for the first time, life as we know it cannot live on this scorching planet.

SPECULOOS-3 b, the newly discovered exoplanet, is a rocky planet located around 55 light-years away from Earth. Days and nights on the planet are limitless, but it zips around its host star every 17 hours. Similar to how the moon is to Earth, astronomers believe the planet is tidally locked to its star. The nightside is imprisoned in perpetual darkness, while a single dayside is always directed toward the star.

The exoplanet’s star, a red dwarf star approximately the size of Jupiter that is 7 billion years old, regularly emits radiation that causes the planet to heat up to Venus-like levels, according to telescope measurements. According to scientists’ latest analysis, which was published on May 15 in the journal Nature Astronomy, whatever atmosphere that the planet may have had may have easily gone into space long ago and left behind a sizzling boulder that was devoid of air.

“Life as we know it could not emerge on the surface of the planet—atmosphere or not—because it could not sustain large amounts of water in liquid form,” said Michaël Gillon, the primary author of the study and an astronomer at the University of Liège in Belgium, to Live Science. “It is a bare rock planet like Mercury.”

The researchers stated that although though SPECULOOS-3 b is uninhabitable by life, it is sufficiently close to Earth to allow for in-depth investigations on its chemical composition, which could determine whether the planet was ever geologically active.

For example, future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be able to verify whether or not volcanoes have erupted on the planet. That might shed light on how rocky planets, such as SPECULOOS-3 b, originate around dim, luminous stars and whether some of them are potentially habitable even though they are near their sun.

Gillon stated that the team “searched intensively” for planetary siblings of SPECULOOS-3 b in the same solar system but was unable to locate any. He mentioned the possibility that those extra planets exist, but they are either too small or too far away from their host star to be visible.

Around a Cold Star is a Hot Planet

Since 2011, Gillon and his associates have used a network of six telescopes dispersed around Chile, the Canary Islands, and Mexico to identify SPECULOOS-3 b. The network is known as the Search for Planets Eclipsing Ultra-Cool Stars, or SPECULOOS. Its name is derived from a spiced shortbread from Belgium that is typically presented to kids on December 6th in honor of St. Nicholas Day.

Finding rocky planets around ultracool dwarf stars, whose small size makes it simpler for telescopes to find planets in orbit, is the primary objective of the project. Not only are they hundreds of times dimmer and thousands of degrees colder than the sun, but they also burn up their fuel slowly and have a much longer lifespan—roughly 100 billion years. A helium leak in the spacecraft’s propulsion system has forced NASA and Boeing to postpone the company’s CST-100 Starliner’s first crewed mission once more.

NASA said in a statement late on May 17 that the Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission, which was originally slated for May 21, has been rescheduled to no sooner than May 25 at 3:09 p.m. Eastern in order to continue work on a leak in the spacecraft’s helium pressurization system.

The most recent postponement occurred three days after NASA and Boeing announced that they would be postponing the launch, which was originally planned for May 17, in order to fix a thruster in the spacecraft’s service module that was leaking helium. At the time, Boeing stated that it was trying to better characterize the leak and build a flight justification to fly the system as-is without repairing the flange. The leak was found to be related to a flange in one thruster.

NASA stated in the announcement of the additional postponement that “pressure testing performed on May 15 on the spacecraft’s helium system showed the leak in the flange is stable and would not pose a risk at that level during the flight.” “Boeing teams are working to develop operational procedures to ensure the system retains sufficient performance capability and appropriate redundancy during the flight.”

In its earnings report for FY 2023–24, Mahindra & Mahindra recently disclosed that, during the just ended fiscal year, the company’s overall earnings for the whole automotive division amounted to Rs 76,156 crores. This resulted in a 24% increase in revenue over the prior fiscal year.

Mahindra to launch 16 new SUVs by 2030

By 2030, Mahindra plans to introduce up to 16 new SUVs into the passenger car market. Nine vehicles with combustion engines and seven with all-electric propulsion are included in this. Three of the seven combustion SUVs—including the recently released XUV 3XO—will be mid-cycle facelifts of current models, with the other three being completely new models.

In the upcoming years, Mahindra is anticipated to introduce updated versions of the XUV 700 and Scorpio N in addition to the XUV 3XO. Maruti Suzuki has said that it will introduce a CNG version of the fourth-generation Swift in India.

The Z12E engine, a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine with 82 horsepower and 112 Nm, will be available in this new model.

A 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed automated manual gearbox (AMT) are the two possible gearbox options for the Z12E motor.

Swift CNG to be first Maruti car with new engine

The new Z12E engine will be installed in the Swift CNG, the first Maruti Suzuki car in India.

When running in pure CNG mode, this engine produces somewhat less power and torque, which makes it distinctive.

With the addition of this engine, Maruti Suzuki has achieved a major milestone by increasing the selection of its fuel-efficient cars.

Pricing and fuel efficiency

The new Swift is currently available priced between ₹6.49 lakh and ₹9.64 lakh (ex-showroom).

But the CNG trims should cost roughly ₹90,000–95,000 more than the equivalent petrol versions.

Impressive mileage estimates for the new Swift are available: 25.75 km/liter for an automatic gearbox and 24.80 km/liter for a manual gearbox.
