Around two million years ago, the solar system traveled through a dense cloud of gas and dust between stars, leaving Earth to withstand the harsh conditions of interstellar space. This is how scientists believe Earth may have momentarily lost protection from the sun.

During that period, sabretooth tigers and mastodons were among the prehistoric creatures that coexisted on our planet with our ancestors. Additionally, it was during this time when Earth was experiencing the ice age that ended barely 12,000 years ago.

Numerous elements contribute to ice ages, such as the tilt and spin of our planet, the amount of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere, shifting plate tectonics, and surface volcanic eruptions. However, this discovery indicates that drastic shifts in our planet’s climate, such as the beginning and end of ice ages, could potentially be influenced by the location of our solar system within our home galaxy, given the date of when scientists believe Earth plunged through interstellar space.

More precisely, the team responsible for the latest discoveries hypothesizes that two million years ago, while traveling through the Milky Way, the solar system may have come across a dense area of interstellar gas and dust. Furthermore, that area might have been thick enough to obstruct the “solar wind,” a stream of charged particles that was emanating from the sun and perhaps bringing about a sharp drop in temperature.

Lead author of the study Merav Opher, a space physicist and heliosphere expert at Boston University, stated in a statement that “this paper is the first to quantitatively show there was an encounter between the sun and something outside of the solar system that would have affected Earth’s climate.”

This team believes that the solar wind may have once been blocked by a frigid cloud of interstellar material, compressing the heliosphere in the process. This could have temporarily (in cosmic terms) taken Earth and other planets out of the heliosphere’s protective orbit.

“Stars move, and now this paper is showing not only that they move, but they encounter drastic changes,” said Opher.

Opher turned back time using advanced computer models to ascertain the impact that such a bombardment of thick interstellar dust on the heliosphere might have had on Earth. This made it possible for her and the group to see the sun’s location two million years ago and to ascertain the whereabouts of the heliosphere and the rest of the solar system at that time.

Additionally, they monitored the passage through time of a band of dense, cold gas known as the “Local Ribbon of Cold Clouds system” as it raced across the Milky Way. This indicated the possibility of a collision between the heliosphere and one thick cloud, dubbed the “Local Lynx of Cold Cloud,” located at the end of the Local Ribbon of Cold Clouds system.

New compact SUVs from brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Skoda are about to launch in India.

Leading automakers including Skoda, Hyundai, and Kia are expected to deliver a flurry of new models in the popular compact SUV class in the Indian market in 2025.

1. Skoda Compact SUV:

The long-awaited Indian launch date for Skoda’s compact SUV has now revealed. This sub-four-meter SUV is scheduled to go on sale in March 2025. It will be constructed on the highly localised MQB A0 IN platform and will share a number of parts with the Kushaq, its midsize SUV sibling. A 1.0L three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine will provide its power.

The engine’s power and torque outputs, which are 115 PS and 178 Nm, respectively, are planned to be the same as those of the Kushaq. Customers will be able to select between an automatic and manual gearbox.

2. New Gen Hyundai Venue:

Hyundai is going to introduce the second generation Venue next year, coinciding with the start of production at the recently purchased Talegaon plant (previously held by General Motors). The 2025 Hyundai Venue, code-named Q2Xi internally, will see substantial improvements in terms of functionality and design, but no major mechanical changes are anticipated.

3. Kia Syros:

The Kia Clavis is projected to launch in India in early 2025 and will eventually be available in hybrid and electric forms. Sandwiched between the Sonet and the Seltos, the Clavis—rumored to be called Syros—will include an SUV style that is reminiscent of the popular Soul SUV around the world.

Anticipated for delivery in the latter part of 2025, the Kia Clavis electric version seeks to meet the growing need for environmentally friendly mobility options. Official announcements have been made by Tata Motors on the much awaited debut of the Sierra EV in India in FY2026.

The all-electric SUV is anticipated to be constructed on Tata’s Gen2 EV platform and will include design cues that are evocative of the 1990s Sierra original.

In FY2026, the business plans to introduce its first model under the luxury Avinya brand in addition to the Sierra EV.

Sierra EV: A blend of nostalgia and innovation

A more developed version of the Sierra EV was unveiled at Auto Expo 2023 after it was first shown as a concept during Auto Expo 2020.

Characteristic elements of the original Sierra, such the curved-over rear-side windows, squarish wheel arches, and high-set bonnet, will be carried over into the design of the Sierra EV.

Avinya range to debut in FY26

These cars will be built on the modular EMA platform developed by Jaguar Land Rover; in order to cut costs, this platform will be modified for local manufacturing.

Tata’s new plant in Tamil Nadu will produce the Avinya line.

Tata Motors’s ambitious plans for EV expansion

In addition to introducing new electric vehicles, Tata Motors is working to increase the number of public charging stations.

By FY30, the company wants to have more than 100,000 chargers instead of just over 10,000.

By FY30, the number of chargers in the community charging network will increase from 4,300+ to 100,000.
