Andy Murray’s Potential Departure From Wimbledon Due to His Possible Absence from the Paris Olympics

Andy Murray has acknowledged that he might not make it to the Olympics in Paris, which suggests that Wimbledon next month may mark his final tennis match.

After losing in the opening round of the Stuttgart Open, his first grass court tournament of the season, the 37-year-old Briton was knocked out of the world’s top 100 for the first time in two years.

Murray had a dismal performance in which he failed to break his opponent’s serve for the third straight set, ultimately losing 6-3, 6-4 against Marcos Giron of the USA, who is rated No. 54 in the world.

After losing to Giron in his 999th career singles match, he is expected to be ranked No. 128 when the new rankings are revealed on Monday. He is now ranked No. 97.

As a three-time grand slam winner and two-time Olympic champion, Murray is entitled to a spot at the Paris Games, which will be held at Roland Garros, the venue for last week’s French Open. However, Murray had previously stated he would only claim a spot if he felt he could earn a spot on the podium.

Another option is to compete in the doubles competition at the Games alongside Dan Evans, but as of right now, Britain has only announced that Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski, its top-ranked duo, will be traveling.

Murray remarked, “I need to see what happens with the Olympics.” “I’m not 100 per cent sure what the situation is there with the doubles yet and whether or not I will play if I just get in the singles. I don’t know.”

“My body didn’t feel great playing on the clay in the last month or so. I had quite a few issues with my back, so I don’t know if I would go just for singles. I need to wait a little bit and see on that.”

Murray had announced earlier this year that he would retire from tennis this summer, but he hasn’t given an exact date. Murray has had two major hip operations and hasn’t won a men’s tour title since 2019.

Murray was twice a men’s singles champion at Wimbledon, so it’s probable that this will be his last match on a tennis court. He hasn’t stated if he plans to participate in the US hard court season.

On July 1, the London competition gets underway.
